Top tips for a healthy and happy 2019, all year round, not just January!
What do you think of New Year’s resolutions? Now we are into January, lots of people will be thinking about trying to improve their lifestyle in some way, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! Whether you’re one for setting yourself aims for the New Year, or any time of year, experts recommend setting small, achievable goals, so that they’re easier to attain and you don’t feel overwhelmed. Here are a few things you could try to do to make your year a good one. But remember not to put much too much pressure on yourself, small steps are key!
- Try to get more sleep
Sleep is really key to overall health and also to recovery. But it’s often one of the things people overlook the most when trying to take care of themselves. It’s not always easy to get more sleep, if you have trouble achieving that perfect eight hours of slumber, you’ll know what we mean! If you do struggle with getting more sleep, rather than feeling more pressure to fall asleep instantly, why not just allow yourself to get to bed about half an hour earlier and commit to keeping that time screen-free?
- Make healthy food choices
Often when it comes to food, people make the mistake of completely restricting any kind of indulgence at all and this is often the thing that sets them up for failure. Focus on eating healthily most of the time, but not always. It’s not sustainable to completely cut out all “unhealthy items” immediately. Maybe instead commit to eating one more piece of fruit or veg a day. Take your time and be kind to yourself.
- Try and establish a regular exercise routine
We’re all low on time and often setting aside time for exercise is the thing that gets neglected the most – especially if you have a family to look after. Rather than a boring obligation, think of exercise as a bit of ‘me time’ – find an activity you actually enjoy, whether it’s just walking the dog or making a date with a friend so you commit to taking the time out.
- Set aside time for self-care
All of these points are types of self-care. But as well as physical changes, self-care can look like mental and emotional changes too. This is largely a very personal thing, so take some time to think about what this might look like for you. Does it mean taking a detox from social media and stopping email checking for an allotted amount of time each day? Self-care looks different for everyone. Again, focus on slow progress rather than immediate life-changing differences to ensure that the changes are sustainable.
