Five activities for kids in casts

After your child has had a cast put on, of course the main focus should be on pain relief and recovery. Quiet activities such as reading and tablet time will be enough to keep them occupied. But no doubt, before long, they’ll start to get restless. We’ve got some suggestions for gentle activities to keep them entertained, without doing any more damage, but, of course, we recommend you check with a doctor before any physical activities.

  1. If they’re wearing a leg cast, concentrate on games that can be played whilst sitting. Catch with a soft ball or bean bag is a safe and fun game.
  2. Another activity for sitting down is making music. Get some castanets or create a shaker with some rice in a Tupperware box.
  3. If your child is wearing an arm cast, trying to play one-handed games can add some fun to their day. Try playing throw the bean bag, using only their unaffected arm.  Create targets to aim for, such as buckets or hoops.
  4. Keep their minds active, with minimal impact on their arms by setting up a treasure hunt. Leave clues for them to find around the house, or outdoors if they’re feeling up to it.
  5. Finally, some splashing about in a shallow paddling pool whilst wearing a LimbO is a great activity to keep kids active. Here is some further guidance.

Have fun!
