Abroad with a cast – how to enjoy your holiday

We’re back with the second in our series on how to make your summer holiday special when you need a plaster cast or dressing. We’ve already talked over what you need to keep in mind while travelling with a plaster cast – especially when it comes to flying.

But surely once you’ve actually arrived at your destination, there won’t be much for you to do anyway thanks to your cast getting in the way of everything, right? Don’t be so sure. You can still find plenty of ways to make your break exciting and memorable for all the right reasons.

Around the pool

Swimming seems pretty impossible with a cast on – and given how difficult and expensive it is to replace a water-damaged cast, getting one wet is the last thing you’ll want to do.

That doesn’t mean you need to avoid the pool entirely though. LimbO cast protectors are made from waterproof material and can handle being submerged, so you’re free to paddle and splash around at the seaside or in a swimming pool without too much hassle.

Please note that although all LimbO products are fine for showering and most are capable of handling bathing as well, we don’t recommend that you use them for swimming for any long period of time, as they aren’t designed to be submerged for anything more than around 20 minutes due to condensation build-up. Paddling or wading is fine, provided that you or your child isn’t too boisterous! As with all other applications, we would ask you to remember that the LimbO foot model is suitable for showering only.

On the beach

When it comes to going to the beach, the problems that the fine sand and stones present to casts mean that plenty of people with a cast choose to stay away from the shoreline. With the right protection, though – such as our LimbO protectors or Outcast fabric covers for secure protection – a day by the sea is there to be enjoyed once again. The LimbO is transparent too, meaning they won’t mess up your tan lines!

Although our models are designed to provide a watertight seal, make sure take care that you secure it safely before taking it anywhere. But for going out and about without having to worry about getting your cast damaged, these products are perfect for you.

Out and about

Lounging around by the beach or pool is all some of us need for a great break, but it’s not for everybody. If you’re the explorative type, having a cast on could leave you worried about whether you can still go sightseeing and fully take in all the sights and sounds of your destination.

Being able to go on long journeys will obviously depend on the level of mobility you have available after your accident or surgery. Take special care with long-haul trips and anywhere that requires plenty of transport between airports and your accommodation.

Where you’re staying

Make sure to check your travel insurance policy to be sure of what you can and can’t do on holiday. If you’ve been judged as being safe enough to fly, you may be able to avoid some of the more restrictive problems. Make sure you sign a medical clearance form before you fly, as that way you will be able to prove your level of fitness easily, which may be important in getting you more help to make your stay easier.

It’s also worth finding out if your hotel is accessible enough for you if you have a restrictive cast – whether there’s enough elevators and if they’re spacious enough for you, whether your room is big enough and laid out in a way that is easy to travel around, and if it’s easy to get to areas such as reception desks, outdoor areas, and food courts.

Leave the plastic bags and gaffer tape at home – LimbO products form a perfect seal around your cast, allowing you to shower without risk of getting it wet or damaged. Perfect for home and abroad.
