The British Lymphoedema Society have organised Lymphoedema Awareness Week from 5th - 11th March, but how #lymphaware are you?
What is lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes painful swelling anywhere in the body, but most commonly in the limbs of a patient. Swelling occurs when the lymphatic system no longer drains fluid from the body’s tissue. It is estimated that around 200,000 people live with this incurable condition, which is not only painful, but can also lead to low self-esteem and other complications, such as cellulitis and ulcers. The BLS aim to support patients and GPs and produce information like this to help effectively recognise and treat the condition quickly.
Why is it important to be #lymphaware?
Certain treatment options are only available in some areas of the UK and, as with all conditions, early treatment is essential to effectively manage the symptoms. This is why being #lymphaware is so important and it is also why the BLS has been holding an annual awareness week for over 30 years. Just look out for the hashtag #lymphaware on Twitter and Facebook for details of activities and events near you.
Here at LimbO we are showing our support by joining the Thunderclap taking place on 5th March.
